  • Where do the event proceeds go?

  • Proceeds from the November 8th, 2008 Steve Olson Retirement Party benefit the Santa Rosa Junior College Foundation's AG Trust and a special fund established in Steve Olson's honor.

The Ag Trust fund provides resources for the SRJC Agriculture/Natural Resources Department and its various programs for areas that would otherwise go unfunded. SRJC programs supported by the Ag Trust fund include: Agribusiness, Animal Science, Environmental Conservation, Environmental Horticulture, Equine Science, Sustainable Ag, Veterinary Technician, Viticulture, Welding, and Wine Studies. This fund also provides support for student internships, judging competitions, the SRJC Ag Ambassadors, faculty enrichment activities, and improvements at Shone Farm.

A special fund to honor Steve Olson was established upon his retirement from Santa Rosa Junior College. Steve's goal, and therefore our goal, is to raise $65,000 for the Outstanding Agricultural Scholar - Leader Award. This is an SRJC Foundation endowed fund, which means that the fund will last in perpetuity. The Foundation's current distribution policy is to award 4% of the fund's balance on an annual basis, therefore protecting the fund principal and sustaining the fund for the future.

"Hopefully this scholarship will reach the point where it will award a significant amount of money each year. It would be nice to reach the $2,500 award level and eventually award more than one scholarship," said Steve.

The selection criteria for the Outstanding Agricultural Scholar - Leader Award were established by Steve. It is his desire that the student selected for this award demonstrate a combination of scholastic achievement and leadership accomplishments while attending Santa Rosa Junior College. The successful candidate(s) will be a second year student at SRJC who is planning to transfer to a four year university and major in an agricultural field the following year. The term "agriculture" includes all programs within the SRJC Ag/NR Department including Natural Resources, Horticulture, etc.

"The agriculture industry needs bright young and energetic people entering the field and assuming leadership positions. A substantial scholarship of the type I've described may serve as a positive incentive," explained Steve.
